History Of Golf

Golf as we know it was invented in Scotland, but its roots stretches back into Flanders. The first record of Chole is from 1353 and portrays a something that could be described as a mix between hockey and golf played in Flanders (Belgium). The game was preferably played on ice and the players used sticks curved at the bottom to move balls from starting point to finish point. Since Scottish and Dutch merchants traveled a lot between the two regions and traded with each other, the game played in Flanders soon spread to Scotland where it developed on the grassy Scottish fields and soon ceased to be a winter game. It was the Scots that started to

dig holes in the ground instead of simply selecting a finishing point. Digging a hole in the Dutch ice had naturally not been a good idea.

While many countries have a valid claim to an early game that resembles the game of golf, the origins of golf are without a doubt routed in Scotland’s past. The fact is, golf probably derived from other countries and stick and ball type games. However, while these are stick and ball games, they are missing that vital ingredient that is unique to golf. The hole. It was the Scots who introduced the golf hole into the game we now call golf.

Over the centuries, golf has evolved into the game it is today. The first recognizable form being played in Scotland in the early 1400’s. Andrews, Scotland is the birthplace of the game golf. Originating on the east coast

of Scotland, golf quickly became the Scots’ national pastime and passion, bound forever to Scotland’s history and people.

How golf got its start is a fascinating topic that all golfers want to know more about, and the game has a history rich in culture and lore.

There is much lively discussion over the origins of the game of golf. Many different cultures have laid claims to being the first one to have invented the game. For instance, an eleventh century Chinese book talks

about a game that sounds like golf. In the Netherlands’ city of Loenen aan de Vecht the game was said to be mentioned as having been played in 1297. Some scholars believe that the Vikings invented the game of golf in the middle of the thirteenth century. Scotland has long been believed to be the location where golfing was invented as well. Golf was played at the famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, and this led to a law being put in place by King James the Second in 1457. The king’s soldiers were spending too much time playing the game and not practicing their archery, so he outlawed the game at St. Andrews. Early accounts of the game are also seen in depictions inside England’s Gloucester Cathedral dating back to 1340.

1. Until the early17th century, People used wooden balls for playing golf. Then the Featherie ball was invented. A Featherie is a hand sewn cowhide bag stuffed with goose feathers and coated with paint. The Featherie remained the standard Golf ball for more than two centuries, due to its superior fight characteristics.
2. ln 1848, Robert Adam Paterson invented the Gutta Percha ball. Gutties had textured surfaces to improve their aerodynamic qualities and where also cheaper to produce. They only replaced feathered balls completely within a few years.
3. In the 20th century, multi layer balls were developed, first as wound balls consisting of a solid or liquid-filled

core wound with a layer of rubber thread and a thin outer shell. This design allowed manufacturers to fine-tune the length, spin and feel characteristics of balls. Wound balls were especially valued for their soft feel.
4. These days golf balls are made of cores of titanium compounds, hybrid materials, softer shells and a more pressurized core. They usually consist of a two-three, or four layer designs, consisting of various synthetic materials like surlyn or urethane blends.

For generations, the favorite type of recreation in my family has been golf. I remember being a small child and trailing my great-grandfather, my grandfather and my own father around the golf course near my mother’s place of work. Come to think of it, my only memory of my great grandfather is that of him with a golf club in his hands. Actually, the same goes for my grandfather as well. I remember that as a young boy, the first time I ever received applause in the classroom was when I talked about the history of golf. I guess everyone was surprised to see an eight year old knowing so much about an adult’s game. Actually, I can still

remember it vividly now.
